Genuinely refreshing

Even if you are something of an aficionado, you could be forgiven for thinking the 2022 Kia Stinger is a new generation of the stunning grand tourer when you see one parked up or driving around Gainesville, Buford, Cumming or Duluth. Despite changes to the exterior styling as well as new colors, infotainment tech, and upgraded engines, this is actually a very notable mid-cycle refresh of the stunning five-door Kia and not an entirely new model.

Styling and trim levels

It’s quite hard to put the Kia Stinger into a particular pigeonhole or segment of the auto market, but what is easy to state with some confidence is it’s an absolutely stunning car that turns heads in a way normally reserved for luxury cars, costing way, way more than the Kia. The changes to the exterior styling are relatively modest, with tweaks to the headlights that make the car look even meaner, but this was a case of not messing too much with an obviously winning formula.

Although you could call the Stinger a five-door hatch, a compact executive car, a large family car, a sport sedan, or a grand tourer (GT), the three available trim levels would lean towards the latter option. The entry-level 2022 Kia Stinger is the GT-Line, the mid-range version is the GT1, and the range-topping model is the GT2.

If a Hybrid version of the Sorento is what you’re looking for, there are S and EX trim levels available, while the Sorento Plug-In Hybrid is offered in SX and SX Prestige trims.

Powertrains and performance

2022 Kia Stinger powertrains and performance

There are two engines available for the 2022 Kia Stinger, and one of the biggest changes for the new model year is an increase in power and displacement for the base engine. That new powerplant is a 2.5-liter turbo-four that you may recognize from a couple of other recent Kia models, and in this particular application, it produces 300 horsepower and 311 lb.-ft. of torque. That power then gets sent to the rear wheels in standard form – just as it should be – through an eight-speed automatic transmission, and this powertrain can get the Stinger from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds.

If you want the full-fat version of the Stinger, however, the alternative is a 3.3-liter turbo-six which then provides the Kia with 368 horsepower and 376 lb.-ft. of torque that gets the 0 to 60 mph time to 4.7 seconds and delivers a top speed of 167 mph. If the traditional performance-car format of rear-wheel-drive isn’t to your liking, all-wheel-drive with torque vectoring is also available with either powerplant.

Features and equipment

Although the Stinger might look like something of a track day weapon, its styling, and aggressive persona don’t come at the expense of spaciousness, practicality, or comfort. The Stinger’s safety credentials have been enhanced as part of the 2022 refresh, with all models now coming with standard automatic emergency braking, active lane control, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitors, adaptive cruise control and rear parking sensors. This has helped the Kia earn the NHTSA’s five-star rating for overall safety and Top Safety Pick+ status from the IIHS.

The Stinger lineup may have been slimmed-down this year, but the list of standard features certainly hasn’t had the same treatment. Even the entry-level GT-Line comes with a power-adjustable driver’s seat, leather upholstery, a 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless smartphone charging, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, 18-inch alloys, satellite navigation, and a rearview camera.
