Which Kia Models Have the Best Gas Mileage

When it comes to narrowing down the features you want in your new Kia cruiser, fuel economy is a huge factor. You are a hardworking individual who has chosen to shop for one of the most reliable daily drivers in the world. While all KIA’s are great on gas, fuel becomes a huge factor if you commute a lot and rack up the miles. Let’s take a look at how the vehicles in our current inventory rank on the scale of fuel-efficiency.

2018 Kia Fuel-Efficiency Ratings

We calculated the combined average of 49 different fuel ratings for the entire fleet or 2018 Kia models and powertrain options available in each to arrive at a final estimate of 32 MPG/e combined average for city and highway driving. This a great number when you consider that many of these vehicles are large SUVs and vans. That being said, you really can’t go wrong with any KIA.

Kia Niro Models

If you are looking for those with the best efficiency, little discussion is needed. The 2018 Kia Niro models are all super-fuel-efficient. They all feature a super-efficient 1.6 L 4-cylinder engine and automatic transaxles. At the base end, you start off with an excellent 49 MPG for combined city and highway. This is a great vehicle to drive around town with its 51 MPG city/46 MPG highway rating. Inexplicably, the FE trim package bumps up the fuel economy at least an extra mile per gallon across the board and reaches 49 MPG on the highway.

It is unclear why the touring edition is rated at 43 MPG combined and 46 city/40 hwy. It may be nothing more than different fuel-mapping for different driving conditions. A more aggressive fuel-mapping program will raise the shift points and therefore force your engine to churn out the higher RPMs for more performance and power. The plug-in hybrid reaches an amazing 105 MPGe and 46 MPG when driving on gas.

Kia Soul Electric

If you are in the market for an all-electric vehicle, the Kia Soul Electric is the best on fuel economy because it doesn’t burn any gas. The 108 MPGe rating for combined (124 MPGe city/ 93 MPGe highway) is merely a hypothetical rating of how much electric energy it uses in relation to gasoline. These numbers reaffirm the supreme efficiency of electric motors in an alternate context.

Kia Optima Models

The Kia Optima is a sporty sedan that still gets excellent gas mileage. Four different engines provide a wide range of fuel economy ratings. The base model 4-cylinder 2.0 creeps by with 25 MPG combined (22 cty/31 hwy). The 2.4 L 4-cylinder steps up the game with 28 MPG combined (24 cty/34 hwy).

The FE trim package apparently stands for Fuel Economy. This model raises the bar with a combined 29 MPG (29 city/36 hwy). The engine displacement then drops below the base model 2.0 for a 31 MPG combined (28 cty/37 hwy) rating. The Kia Optima Plug-in Hybrid option takes the 2.0 base model engine and refines it with an electric motor for an astounding 103 MPGe and 40 MPG gas rating.

Kia makes a number of super fuel-efficient vehicles. Avoiding the Cadenza, K900, Sedona, Sorento, and some Stinger/Sportage trim levels, is a good idea unless you need a big vehicle or big engine. Selecting any of these hybrid or electric vehicles is your best choice for fuel efficiency.
